Third MA photoshop image. Started to get back into things with this one. The layers were becoming more numerous and detailed than the first two examples. There wasn't much by way of pre-set generic effects in this one, mainly just using burn, blur, smudge masking and opacity settings over photos I had taken on holidays. I didn't use any royalty free image and only one - the text buried in the sky - was taken from the Internet. The water flowing in the middle ground was created using airbrush and cloning. I think it looks fairly realistic and fits in with the other photo-based source images.

Junior Cert drawing exam today. The pupils got through it alright. Some found it hard to concentrate though for an hour and a half for the life drawing. I wonder if the pressure of getting the project completed on time burns some of them out? After the intensity of the last few weeks I anticipate it might be a challenge to keep them focused for the run up to the end of term.
Just a quick one to follow up on an earlier post about the primary school project our Hdip students were involved with. Have a look out for the Learning City magazine which is a CIT in-house magazine as there will be an article and more photos of the childrens' s work. Looking forward to seeing the results of this and getting a bit of publicity for the hard work the students put in to the various projects!!

Junior Cert Project deadline day coming up fast!!!! Its all hands to the pump with the pupils having to pull out the stops to get things done. Its a stressful time for everone and its hard to balance the finishing touches to the work with the organisation and labelling of stuff. I'm getting sleepness nights about it to be honest. Anyone else strung out yet?

Every year I get my pupil's to evaluate the work of well known local and international artists by distributing catalogues, postcards etc in class. The pupils pick an image and write about their views on the work and how it makes them feel. The text here was written by a 13 yr old and has always served as a reminder of how we should never underestimate the brilliance of a young mind and its capacity for higher order thinking. Don't think I was this perceptive when I was her age!!!Also, I meant to put this up a while back. it is a gesture drawing
by a third year pupil. For years I had always got pupils to do gesture drawings in a very formal way with distinct sections of the sheet devoted to a separate pose. This year I invited the class to be a bit more experimental and overlap poses if they wanted. Don't know why I didn't try this before (most of you have probably done this before) as I feel allowing sections of the figure to merge and overlap is more dynamic and expressive. I will definitely keep this going in the future

We brought our Hdip students on a field trip this week. It was all to do with an art project collaboration with a primary school in Wilton who invited our trainee teachers to contribute ideas for the children to make artwork in celebration of the schools 25th anniversary. We hired a bus big enough to bring all the students as well as transport the 8 foot sheets of hardboard that will be used in the projects. The experience of the students meeting with the primary school staff and management was a valuable experience, but also a positive one for myself and my colleague Susanna as it gives the chance for us all to be more outward-looking and work within different environments and situations. But it was also fun as we felt like typical teachers sitting at the front of the bus next to driver keeping an eye on the students. But at least Hdip students are a well behaved bunch!!!!! The students have worked well in developing their ideas, which include painting, mixed media, photo montage, shadow puppets, mural, printmaking, site specific installation. As it is a Gaelscoil the themes and images will be based upon Irish myths, legends and music. I'm looking forward to the outcomes of this project and I might be able to upload pictures to the blog!

Its interesting to consider how processes can change
according to the media that is explored.

But being a bit of an old fogey that youthful exuberance
is a bit tiring so I like to think of more sedate things and
the interactions with spaces and objects within a natural
environment. And who better than Andy Goldsworthy!!!!!
This blogging lark can become an obsession. Have a look at the link below - its like a chapter in book more than anything else. Still, I love the music he talks about and the interface between music and art. Its an area that fascinates me and especially relevant to inter-disciplinary art and new media.

Day one. Finding out interesting things about social networking and sharing of info online. I'm surprised to find out that I know more about this stuff that I had realised - so I must resurrect some of my lapsed accounts like Fliker and myspace. Maybe those hours online and playing computer games may turn out be useful after all!!!!!!
